What is the best flour to use for vegan flour tortillas?

We prefer using bread flour for this vegan tortilla recipe; however, all purpose or wheat flour would also work.

Even a mix of half all-purpose and half whole wheat will work with this recipe.

We cannot currently recommend a gluten free flour or mix at this time. We are adamantly working on creating a gluten free dough.

Can I use a different sugar than cane sugar to make vegan flour tortillas?

Yes! Maple syrup and agave will also work.

No matter which type of sugar that you use, you don’t need to adjust any other ingredient amounts.

How do you make Vegan Flour Tortillas?

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cane sugar, yeast, and salt. Then, add in the water.

Using a spatula, fold until mostly combined.

Sprinkle a little more flour on a clean surface and roll out the dough. It will be very sticky. Add a bit more flour and knead for a few minutes. You want it to be sticky but not come off on your hands.

Form a ball.

Cut ball into 16 equal pieces. You can roughly do this or you can literally weigh out the pieces on a scale.

Fold the ends under each other and roll into a ball. Repeat until all the pieces are rolled into balls. Cover with a towel while you work.

Take one ball and roll into a thin circle, about ⅛ inch thick.

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Carefully place circle into pan (no oil) and a teaspoon water on each side (trying not to let the water touch the dough).

Cover with a lid and let cook for about 60 seconds until you start to see bubbles and slightly golden brown. Flip, add another teaspoon water on each side, cover, and cook another 45-60 seconds.

While dough is cooking, roll out the next dough ball and repeat process until all your vegan flour tortillas have been made.

Use as desired.

Can be frozen or stored in an air tight container at room temperature for 5 days. Warm before using.

Can I prep the dough ahead of time?

Yes! You sure can!

Once your bowl is covered, you can place the bowl in the fridge up to 2 days before you plan to use it.

Just make the recipe as written, cover and place in fridge until ready to use.

Can I freeze this vegan dough before making tortillas?

Yes! Make the recipe all the way through. Then, you can place in a ziplock bag and place in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To use, let set in the fridge overnight until thawed.

Is this vegan dough Top 8 Allergen Free?

Unfortunately, at the time, we cannot recommend using a gluten free flour with this recipe. Please know that we are working on a gluten free dough, but it’s just not quite there yet.

Otherwise, it is allergen free.
